One Health Integration in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
The mission of the One Health Institute (OHI) is to work at the interface of animals, people, and the environment to solve complex problems impacting health and conservation. As we work to solve these complex problems, it is our responsibility to use our research, teaching, advocacy, and academic leadership to fight the widespread adversities that disproportionately harm historically marginalized and underrepresented communities around the world. Racial, gender, and social equity are a public health crisis, rooted in centuries of injustices that continue to affect all elements of the social determinants of health. Addressing these challenges will take committed, long-term action from across society.
In exploration of what can be accomplished in the short-term, the OHI initiated a small grants program to promote the integration of the One Health approach into efforts to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (DEIA). We believe that the One Health approach is both in need of better DEIA immersion throughout all engagements and could also be an excellent method for exploring novel applications and improvements to address inequities. We would like to encourage innovative proposals that connect students, staff, faculty, and community members to address these issues.
To that end, our competitive grants program will fund up to four projects that support incorporation of DEIA in One Health activities, as well as projects that propose the use of the One Health approach to address structural discrimination and reduce biases and inequities. Projects should be no more than one year in duration with a maximum budget of $5,000.
