NEW STUDY: Scientists Investigate Green Sea Turtle Tumor Disease

A new epidemiological study of endangered juvenile green sea turtles in eastern Brazil suggests that factors such as water temperature, salinity and proximity to environmental stressors could trigger the development of a tumor disease associated with a herpesvirus.

One Health Institute Scholars in Puerto Rico

Last week several One Health Institute students visited Puerto Rico to tell their One Health stories about marine mammal health, rodentborne diseases in California, and tickborne diseases in Tanzania at the National Veterinary Scholars Symposium (NVSS).

Julien Ferrero (VetAgro Sup, Lyon, France), Amalie Solli (UC Davis), and Nicole Perry (U Florida) were with OHI for summer research experiences in the Bird and Smith research groups.

NEW STUDY: Projecting the Impact of an Ebola Virus Outbreak on Endangered Mountain Gorillas

Study Predicts Poor Survival Rates if Ebola Infects Endangered Mountain Gorillas

In partnership with several collaborators including Smithonian Institution we published a computer simulation of what could happen if mountain gorillas got Ebola virus. There was an outbreak in humans in 2018 in DR Congo not far from Virunga National Park, so we know the virus is present in the region and gorillas are susceptible to the disease. Fortunately, this was just a theoretical exercise and the mountain gorillas remain Ebola-free.

A True One Health Champion: Matt Blake

Matthew Patrick Blake (June 24, 1974 - February 20, 2023)

With heavy hearts and endless rain in California that mirrors our tears, we say goodbye to our dear friend, leader, and One Health mentor Matthew Patrick Blake. Matt, for those that worked with him, that connected with him, and who quickly became friends (all of us), was an inspiration and a role model. He was a founder of the UC Davis One Health Institute, my close friend and constant critic, my mentor, my challenger, and he played similar roles with all of our UC Davis staff, faculty, students, and international collaborators.

OHI Around the World: One Health in Chile

Is Chile California’s home away from home? I visited Santiago, Chile again in Feb 2023, and once again felt strong synergies across the people and the places that have so much in common…it struck me that we share similar climates, similar crops, similar coasts, similar mountains, similar music, similar passions, to those we find in California… just in opposite hemispheres of our world.
