The interpersonal core competencies, modeled on the UC Davis Principles of Community, are written into the job expectations of each OHI employee. This document serves as a reminder of our values, of how we agree to treat our colleagues and selves, and it is also meant as a point of reflection during the annual review process, with the competencies used as goals and touchpoints. The January, 2021 revision of our document is as follows:
As an employee of the One Health Institute, in addition to performing job functions in a professional manner, you are expected to always:
- Model the behavior you expect from others, showing respect during all interactions.
- Act in ways that build respect and trust.
- Act in the best interest of UC Davis, One Health Institute, and all related business units, even if personal sacrifice is required; recognizing that the best interest of the OHI includes your perspective on policies and standard operating procedures that you believe can be improved.
- Ensure actions are consistent and fair even when under pressure.
- Communicate honestly with all colleagues, taking the time to listen and understand others’ views.
- Seek a range of views when solving problems, seeking “win-win” solutions.
- Be a team player, recognizing that all OHI employees are on the same team.
- Help colleagues understand the bigger picture and involve them in developing action plans.
- Accept responsibility and constructive feedback without becoming defensive.
- Personally expand your professional development by pursuing learning opportunities including topics on anti-racism, diversity, and inclusion.
- Address structural racism and inequities both internally at UC Davis and within the OHI, and externally.
