This review explores the factors that lead to the emergence of zoonotic pathogens and discusses the current and evolving methods used to detect pathogens, especially in resource-limited settings.

Key Lessons

  • Engaging with and building trust between local governments, community leaders, and scientists to help disseminate public health messaging to at-risk communities is an important step toward integrating a One Health approach
  • A successful One Health approach reduces individual exposure to pathogens and ensures a lasting zoonotic disease surveillance system
