World Albatross Day 2025 Highlights Health Threats Facing Ocean Sentinels
June 19 marks World Albatross Day, organized by the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP), to raise awareness about the growing threats to albatrosses and petrels worldwide. This year’s theme focuses on the devastating impact of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) on these already vulnerable seabirds.
Dr. Marcela Uhart, wildlife veterinarian with the One Health Institute and director of our Latin America Program, works closely with ACAP to address health risks affecting listed species. “We’re witnessing a perfect storm of threats,” Uhart says, referring to the convergence of bird flu, fisheries bycatch, invasive predators, and pollution.
Albatrosses are critical indicators of ocean health, and their decline signals deeper issues in marine ecosystems. Learn more about the urgent need for coordinated conservation action in ACAP’s full announcement.
