We propose to provide undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups an opportunity to obtain One Health research experience to facilitate their preparation and success in the health professions. Veterinary science, particularly, has suffered from limited engagement of underrepresented groups early on in career planning, which could hinder recruitment into the profession. Limited diversity in the profession to date has impacted its potential to reach diverse communities and benefit from varied perspectives. We propose to engage undergraduate fellows in hands-on One Health research experiences to cultivate their interest and foster a learning environment that broadens inclusivity within the One Health community. This pilot will inform on barriers and opportunities for underrepresented groups in the veterinary sciences and provide insight for a proposal seeking additional funding to expand this pilot program. These combined efforts have the potential to increase diversity within One Health professions by increasing accessibility to opportunities for success.
