Introduction

The One Health approach champions collaborative and transdisciplinary solutions to addressing crises our world faces. Climate change is one of the greatest threats of our time and has wide impacts on climate extremes (including wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, etc.), infectious disease transmission, and biodiversity loss. Enhancing multi-sector collaboration is critical for addressing these global challenges. In this competition, we are seeking real world examples of collaborative solutions to climate change-related emergency situations that have previously impacted your region/country.

Eligibility

The competition is open to students from around the world that form a team of 2-4 individuals maximum that come from 2 or more fields of study related to One Health. These disciplines could include but are not limited to medical, veterinary, legal, social sciences, environmental science, public health, engineering, or any relevant field related to One Health and climate change.

Case Selection

Teams must select one recent climate change-related event or issue that has been featured in their local news. This event should be both relevant and challenging to your local community. The chosen case should be directly linked to climate change and its multifaceted impacts on human, animal, and environmental health. Ensure that the selected case scenario is engaging and thought-provoking, providing teams with sufficient information to develop a strategic and context specific response rooted in the complexities of climate change. This should encourage creativity and critical thinking while maintaining a strong focus on the interconnectedness of climate change, local innovation, and One Health principles.

Logistics

Your team will develop and present a One Health approach to the climate case challenge. Teams must submit a one-page summary and 10 minute recorded video outlining their proposed approach (due October 23, 2023) which will then undergo a screening process. The top 4 best proposals will be selected to move forward with presenting their case live at the CUGH Virtual Satellite Session on October 31.  All invited teams should be prepared to attend the virtual session in real time, so they are available for questions.
